Case Study
Avon Hills Folk School needed its first-ever catalog to do more than list classes. The publication had to introduce the organization, articulate its mission, and express why hands-on, traditional craft education feels especially vital right now. It needed to resonate with longtime supporters while welcoming new audiences unfamiliar with the folk school model.
At the same time, the catalog had to function as a clear, practical guide to spring and summer offerings. We wanted to balance storytelling with logistics, inspiration with usability, and establish a strong foundation for future seasonal publications—all while remaining authentic to the school’s deeply rooted identity.
We began, as we always do, by clarifying goals, defining audiences, and ensuring the brand’s integrity remained central to every decision. From there, we mapped out a flow that felt natural and inviting. Instead of jumping straight into class listings, we led with the folk school’s story and purpose, helping readers understand why this work matters before guiding them into the details of the spring and summer offerings.
Design execution followed strategy. We carried brand elements throughout the piece and made deliberate choices in typography, layout, and pacing to reflect the school’s warmth, craftsmanship, and accessibility. The final catalog balances narrative and navigation—clear and easy to use, yet rich with meaning—establishing a strong, authentic foundation that honors tradition and sets the stage for future growth.
